MY YEAR AS
NATIONAL CHAIRMAN By SA National Chairman
PETER RUNKEL
Below is a précis of my year as National Chairman, as Alten wouldn’t allow me to have my own magazine!
The hospitality of all Clubs was beyond what I expected or deserved. I am very pleased with the way the clubs are currently run and believe
the leadership has the best interests of Nomads at heart.
This year, I travelled 75,539.60 kilometres—almost twice around the world. I spent 104 days away from home, attended 10 non-golf events,
and played 50 games of golf.
It has been an absolute honour and privilege to represent this great club of ours, and I hope that in some small way, I was able to contribute
to the ongoing success of Nomads in South Africa.
26 March 2024 - NOMADS SA GIRLS ROSE BOWL LOST CITY, SUN CITY
In my light blue blazer, I embarked on my first official duty. I was fortunate to attend the
closing day of the NOMADS SA GIRLS ROSE BOWL at Lost City. I addressed the
players, parents and other attendees. Witnessing these budding stars showcase their
talent on the course was a true privilege. Our sponsorship, put to good use, reinforces
the joy of supporting their journey.
1 May 2024 – ZIMBABWE NATIONALS – ELEPHANT HILLS
I had the privilege of leading a large South African contingent at the Zimbabwe Nationals. The experience was immensely enjoyable for
everyone, and winning the inter-country trophy made it all the more special—a truly proud moment!
25 May 2024 – NORTHERNS NOMADS CLUB VISIT – WOODHILL GOLF CLUB
During my first official club visit, I had a highly productive meeting with the club executive and was delighted to witness the club's positive
atmosphere. I also collected a Matchbox on my first visit…!
19 June 2024 - NATAL NOMADS CLUB VISIT – MT EDGECOMBE THE LAKES
I kicked off my visit to Natal with a committee meeting and dinner at Sika's Guest House, where we also had the privilege of celebrating
Janus Horn's 50th birthday. The next day, I enjoyed a great outing at Mt Edgecombe and was impressed by the innovative approach to the
prize-giving ceremony, where everyone was asked to shower straight after coming off the course. This definitely had a positive effect on
attendance.
23 June 2024 – SUNSHINE TOUR GATHERING OF GREATNESS – ROYAL JOHANNESBURG
I had the privilege of being invited to the Sunshine Tour's Gathering of Greatness, where we had the opportunity to interact with all the
Sunshine Tour staff, sponsors and partner
3 July 2024 - NOMADS SA GIRLS SA u/18 – GARY PLAYER COUNTRY CLUB, SUN CITY
It was wonderful to return to Sun City for the Nomads SA Girls U/18 event, one of our largest sponsorships. Engaging with the girls and their
parents highlighted just how much they value our support. We can take great pride in playing a role in developing women's golf in South
Africa.
10 July 2024 – UK NOMADS NATIONALS - ST PIERRE, WALES
What a privilege it was to attend the first National Tournament of the United Kingdom Nomads and witness the birth of their second club,
Gloucester. I also had the honour of inducting the first UK Nomads National Chairman, Robbie Hillhouse. Once again, my talent was evident as
I collected my second matchbox. It was wonderful to see all the UK Nomads in their No.1’s at the final night.
17 July 2024 – ZAMBIA NATIONALS – BONANZA GOLF CLUB
After just one day at home following my return from the UK, it was time to visit our "noisy neighbours" in the north. Their third national
tournament did not disappoint. The cowboy bar overlooking the 18th hole was once again a popular spot. I urge any South African Nomad
who hasn't attended one to make it a priority.
